If you’re anything like me, you hate being nickel and dimed by the developer and publishers of games. For the past few years, EA has done a great job of doing this to the consumers. First they added boost slots that gave +1, +3 and +5 to attribute points of your choosing. There are three ways to obtain these boosts. Play the offline BAP mode and hit statistical markers, play online in the EASHL and hit similar statistical markers, or line their pockets by using Microsoft Points and purchasing them. Since there are 12 slots available and generally most people use +5s that cost 160MSP a pop, you’re looking at 1920MSP give or take.
Last year, EA added the Season Ticket which is ~$25. You get 3 days early access to all the sports titles, and 20% off on the boosts. So assuming you get the Season Ticket and buy your boosts, you’re looking at $60+tax for the game, 2000MSP or ~$25 for the Season Ticket and then you can get 12 +5s for ~1500MSP. Now I apologize for making you read things you already likely knew to get to my point, but in the end to stay “competitive” at the beginning of a NHL series launch, you’re almost paying double. If money isn’t an issue to you, I salute you. However if you’re looking for an easy way to unlock boosts with only a handful of hours of investment, then continue on.
Each year since they’ve added boosts, I’ve always unlocked all my boosts for my skater using Be A Pro. A lot of people would say it’s time consuming and it’s cheaper to just use their pay from a few hours of work then to spent a dozen or more to unlock it themselves. The thing is, it doesn’t even need to take that long to unlock them all. Last year with NHL 12, I had 95% of all my skater boosts unlocked after two season of Be A Pro. While that may seem like a lot of time, the trick is knowing how they unlock and using mechanics to your advantage.
Progress towards your boosts only occur if you’re playing in the NHL, so you’ll want to get into the NHL as soon as possible. What I do first, is adjust the sliders of the game in my favour. What I mean by this is putting the gameplay sliders for humans to the maximum/minimum levels to benefit me. Wrist Shot/Slap Shot power and accuracy all maxed, maximum fatigue recovery, minimum fatigue effect, maximum acceleration, etc. Then I do the opposite for the AI, adjusting the sliders to penalize them. Make them slower, more penalty prone, etc.
I start in the CHL, setup so I’m in my draft year. You can either simulate the entire year, or play a few games here and there, especially if you’re going after some of the achievements, then simulate the rest. There are a few boosts involving playing in the CHL, like getting drafted in the first 2 rounds, but they’re mostly +1s. The reason I do this for a season is to get the extra experience to put into my skater. You can simply skip the CHL and go right into the NHL, but your player overall has lower attributes. Personal preference really.
Once you’re in the NHL here’s where it becomes easy. Simulated games do not count towards your progress, you need to get all the statistics yourself. What you can do is start a game, play for a few minutes, get a few points, then exit the game. The rest of the game is simulated, and you keep all the points you obtained yourself. Some of the boosts involve playing 40 games in a season and doing X statistics. This makes it very easy. So you play a partial period then quit having the rest of the game simulated, then simulate the next game. With the adjusted sliders, scoring goals is very easy, and getting around the defense is a non-issue. Overall the process of playing and quitting takes maybe 2-5 minutes. Break that down for an entire season and the playoffs and you’re looking at ~1-3 hours for a season, do that twice and you’ll have unlocked 95% of your skater boosts.
Currently I’m halfway through my first NHL season and I have nearly all my +3s unlocked and a few +5s. After the first season I should have all my +3s and a bunch of +5s. While this works great for skater boosts, and it could work for goalies, it’ll be a lot harder. Goalie boosts generally require having so many shots and saves and because you’re quitting out of games to simulate the rest, you’ll only have a handful of each. It’s better to just play EASHL Club games. As you’re progressing towards your Legend card, you’ll get most of the +3 and +5s you’ll need doing that.
Hopefully this will help a bunch of people out and save yourself the additional $40-$45 in costs to stay competitive in the EASHL and in Online 6v6 Leagues, like the GamingRendo Hockey League for Xbox 360

Does the game have to be on pro this year to unlock the boosts in be a pro in the nhl?

It doesn’t specify that you need to do it on Pro level difficulty, but I would go under the assumption it still does just to be safe. If I find anything out, I’ll let you know.

A buddy did some testing for me, and you can do it on Rookie difficulty. Should be super easy. He also said he used custom rosters and took all the good players off teams. Super cheese! 😛

What about very slow load times for simulating games? That’s gotta take awhile.

The load times aren’t as bad as NHL 12, but they’re still annoying. That being said it’s a fairly quick process if you’ve got an hour to kill towards unlocking the boosts and you’re diligent.

hey can you adjust the sliders midway through doing a season? or do you have to do it at initial startup?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
You can adjust them whenever you like. What I did notice though is you cannot lower the difficulty you started on, so make sure you start on Rookie or you’re stuck on whatever you selected.

im thinking of doing season mode and getting 200 goals for +5 slap acc. could i do my season on rookie and still get the boost?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
Good question. It doesn’t specify the difficulty so it should be the same as the BAP related ones. What you do need to do and I’ve verified is physically score the 200 goals yourself. Simulating the entire season and achieving 200+ goals will not unlock the +5. So play on rookie, play games through until you get to 200 goals, save to be safe and simulate to the end and you should be good.

Hey first off thanks for the advice.
I’m in the process of getting through the CHL, but by simulating every game, my playey keeps getting bumped down a line for poor performance.
Did this happen to you?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
If you notice when you simulate games, the coach will “speak” with you about your lack of interest, blah blah blah. You need to earn so many XP points over the course of so many games. If you earn too few, you get demoted, if you maintain status quo, you stay on the same line, if you exceed expectations, you can be promoted.
If you play every 3rd or 4th game, get a few points and quit out, typically you stay on the same line. There are only 2 boosts I believe that are CHL related and they’re only +1s.
You _MIGHT_ be able to stay on the same line if you start each game, play for a second or two and quit out to have it simulated. I can’t say that for certain, but ultimately in the CHL it’s not that big a deal to get bumped down to the 3rd line. It’s an issue in the NHL when you need to achieve all the requirements at that level for boosts. Hope that helps.

Helps a lot thank you. It’s weird though- you can sim through the CHL no problem, but MUST play a good portion of the preseason NHL games in order to make the team. Otherwise, you are sent back to the CHL. I tried scoring a goal in the first minute or two and then simming the rest; but was sent back down to the CHL after the 3rd game, even with great stats.

Does work in rookie except a couple that say you need to be in pro. I think defensive aware +3 is one. Playing pro with sliders in your favour is the same as playing rookie with sliders in your favor. Make sure to have the AI learn one all the way down. I did not get the +5 offensive aware and +5 wrist shot acc or pwr by play/sim. I had to play from start to finish and as far as I know you have to play 40 games start to finish to get the 40 game attributes. Easy to get everything needed in the 40 games. Can not sim to get new cards, but can sim/play to get new cards. So play game then exit when in there and will cout towards new cards. Veteren gets two plus 5’s, that’s only 50 games.
With sliders in your favour you can play a couple sifts get a atleast a few points and quit. I did this after 40 games and got everything after winning cup except the 1.0 offsides. +5 passing and aggression. I’m guessing it’s not 1.0 offsides per game but one for the year as it doesn’t specify like the 1.0 turnover does. I ended with 4 for the year but kept my save where I had one. Does anyone know anything about the 1.0 offides for a season?
Does anyone also know about the 2 season unlocks and wether the game actually unlocks them unlike nhl12? I invested 2.5 seasons in 12 not simming one game to get the gretzky playmaker boost pack and never got it. What a piss off. I didn’t know I could do all this in 12. I have a feeling it’s going to be the same.
I also have a feeling that it is done on purpose so people will purchase the attributes. I also conclude that many buy them anyway as I couldn’t find much information on this problem for 12.

You can and do get the 2 Seasons, 40 games played, and you can get it with play/then quit simming.
The offside boost unlock is broken, I tried it both ways, less than and greater than 1.0 per game and it didn’t unlock. That one seems to unfortunately require the EASHL counterpart. Hope that helps.

Does this still work? Got the game for Christmas. I’m significantly behind the other players in my club. Would be awesome to get caught up in a hurry.

Yes this still works. Playing with your club will likely help more than this though. You’ll unlock some boosts AND progress towards your player cards. Good luck!

Where can you adjust the sliders you are talking about once you have started the BE A PRO.
I am in the NHL now and want to make the guys easier to get around.
Thanks.

The sliders can be found by going to My Pro and Settings while your BAP is loaded. You press RB I believe to move over from the general settings like camera, sound, etc to get to Gameplay and Rules. Hope that helps.

Thanks greatly for this, Just picked up this years game and am getting to work on the boosts. I went through and compiled a list, this includes the slots you have to unlock to use the boosts. I removed the duplicates as some boosts have the same unlock requirement, as well as most of the boosts that get unlocked while doing another boosts requirement. Also seperated the ones that do not involve BAP. It is indeed correct that most of the requirements can be easily met playing BAP across 2 seasons, starting with CHL to ensure high draft pick (so 3 seasons really, but can sim more in CHL) winning the cup both years, simming about 3 games in between each user played game in regular season. A couple of the boosts say you need to be a sniper, a couple others dmen – however for your second character you don’t need to do the 2 season thing entirely over again, just enough to get the boost. I reccomend ending your played games with a fight as well to build up that requirement.
I might have missed a couple as their layout isn’t very intuitive on the boosts, but I think by doing the below you’ll snatch up everything.

Hey I have already played like 50 games between Drop In games and games in my EASHL Online Club, can I do the Be-A-Pro mode with this character and not lose any of his current boosts / attributes or do I have to create an entire new character to do this?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
There are two different BAP types. There is your online, EASHL/OTP BAP, and there is your offline BAP. Boosts can be used on both versions. Playing OTP/EASHL games unlock your online BAP cards which give you attribute points to spend, the boosts are applied on top of those points. When you play your offline BAP you earn XP for the games you play which can be spent on your offline BAP. You also unlock BAP cards with offline, but they don’t really give you anything. Hope this clears it up for you, if not let me know.

you say to play a game then sim the rest.. but you say we need 40 games played in 2 seasons to unlock most of the boosts.. if you play a game for a few min and quit, it doesnt count as a game played as far as i can tell.
at the end of the game it shows all your improvements but games played remains at 0%… am i doing something wrong, or do these still count as games played?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
The games need to be at the NHL level. If you’re doing this in the CHL or AHL, they don’t count towards progression. It is also quite possible EA changed this as I have had no need to do this since I unlocked my boosts. Hopefully it’s just the CHL/AHL thing and you can do this still. 😀
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
If I build up my player offline will be still have the same attributes online? Or will I have to build up both?
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
No. The boosts you can unlock offline are the only things that carry over to your online BAP. You need to unlock your online cards in order to add points for online. This can be done either in EASHL Club games, Drop-in Games, or Online Team Play.

Just a few notes: I had trouble unlocking the “win 5 games as a BAP goalie” slot. I’m not sure if you need to do a whole game or you can sim into say the 3rd period when your team is winning. Also you have to remember if you replace a goalie in the middle of a game while your team leads and the game is never tied, the goalie you replaced still gets the win. I did a combination of both full game and intervene and won about 8 games in BAP, and the slot randomly opened up one day. BAP goalie sucks as you get lit up even on rookie so best thing to do is lower the sliders and game speed for everyone to make saves easier.
With the “score 200 goals in season mode” boost, you CAN do it on rookie. I basically played full games with 4 minute periods and tried to score 10 goals a game(easy on rookie of course) so I was done around 20 games in and didn’t have to worry which goals were scored by me or the sim.
For the “get 200 hits in a season” boost, I just beefed my players checking and aggression in the second season and played full games until I got my 200 hits. (if you get around 10 a game you can do it in the first 20 games or so)
Warning: Undefined variable $add_below in /homepages/11/d418110977/htdocs/wp-content/themes/leetpress/functions.php on line 180
If you simulate to much you will be played and tossed around by the GM. Start at 16 in the WHL, do not simulate and play at a high level… everyone will be ok. Who the fuck wants to play on rookie and score 100 goals in 22 games what a waste of time. Iv got 75 points in 48 games on high skill. Thats realistic and hella fun. Hope this helps
